FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Orthokeratology?

OrthoK gently and painlessly changes the shape of the cornea while you sleep.

Orthokeratology (OrthoK) is an FDA-approved, non-surgical procedure in which our optometrist personally designs a series of rigid lenses that are customized uniquely for you to create a change in the shape of the cornea. They are worn while you sleep, and removed when you wake. The result is a clear vision, with no glasses or contacts while you are awake.

How does corneal molding work?

Corneal refractive therapy is one of the most advanced ways to control myopia without surgery. The gentle pressure of the tears behind the OrthoK lens causes the cornea to change from its original shape to a newly designed and preferred contour that gives the patient clear eyesight without glasses or contacts while awake.

Software analyzes our doctor’s lens design and converts this information into a contact lens that will be created for you with multiple complex curves that are matched to the unique shape of your cornea (similar to your fingerprint).

Is OrthoK safe?

Yes, completely. Orthokeratology is an FDA-approved, non-surgical procedure that we’ve used to help our patients improve their eyesight for over 4 decades. Ortho-K is completely safe and reversible.

Is OrthoK right for me?

If you want to be able to see throughout the day without the need for contact lenses or glasses and you don’t want to get surgery, then OrthoK is right for you. Make your appointment for a complimentary consultation with us to see how OrthoK can give you clear and unaided eyesight during your waking hours.

Orthokeratology (OrthoK) is ideal for both children and adults, nearsighted, farsighted, and astigmatic patients, as well as those over 40 who find they need help for everyday reading (presbyopia) but don’t want to wear reading glasses.

OrthoK is a perfect choice for any adult who is active during the day and doesn’t want to deal with contact lenses or glasses. It’s also a great choice for children who need vision correction – without the hassles of caring for contact lenses or glasses during school, at sport or other daytime activities.

Should kids do OrthoK?

YES! Especially for kids and young adults, Ortho-K can stop the eyes from progressively getting weaker. This can be a gigantic health benefit.

Studies show that OrthoK lenses can stop the progression of myopia in children as well as adults. We have plenty of patients who started OrthoK at an early age and avoided anticipated vision loss as they grew older. Patients may stop using OrthoK at any time, resulting in a return to their original/natural corneal shape.

How long does it take to get results?

Most patients who come to our New York OrthoK Center will see a difference in the clarity of their vision within in the first few days.

How long will my clear vision last?

In most cases, you’ll have a clear vision for all your waking hours. If this is not so, Our doctor will work with you to perfect your lenses in order to ensure this result.

How long has OrthoK been in used for eyesight improvement?

The practice of Orthokeratology was founded in the early 1960s. It was developed as a means to correct, control and reverse myopia without surgery. In the 1990s, with the onset of computerized corneal topography as well as new materials available for the contact lens used, OrthoK became a very precise and controlled fitting process for the best nonsurgical eyesight improvement results.

How much does OrthoK cost in NYC?

During your complimentary consultation, our doctor will evaluate your case and discuss the fees and time frame expected for your treatment.

Dear OrthoK.NYC,

Ethan has been so lucky to have these lenses he wears only at night! It really helped his dance since he is not worried about wearing glasses or soft lenses. In only one year of wearing it, he now has 20/20 vision.

Your team is awesome. Highly recommend this doctor for this procedure.

Thank you!

– Ethan’s Mom
